The collection contains correspondence from 1846 to 1900. Letters from the Mexican War relay hometown news to friends on the front and include correspondence with future partner Edmund (Ned) A. Maginness. From between the Mexican and Civil Wars, H.G. Love writes to Scribner of a trip to California and Naples, and describes the Bay of Naples in detail. Civil War letters are mostly from Scribner in Kentucky and Tennessee to Maginness, and include Scribner's attempts to obtain a position in the Treasury Department. Also included are miscellaneous items about business, family, and veterans' affairs, and a photograph of Scribner in Civil War uniform.

Benjamin Franklin Scribner was born in New Albany, Indiana. Scribner alternated between careers as a military man and a druggist. He served with the 2nd Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican War, and with the 38th Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. He also was a chemist and druggist in New Albany, Ind., in the firm of Scribner and Maginness, and later opened a branch in New York City.
